The Communications Specialist (bilingual) assists in the development and implementation of internal and external communications strategies and materials that promote DPS schools and the district as a whole. The specialist will create dynamic and engaging content in English and Spanish and distribute via a variety of channels including electronic and print media, social media, and the DPS website. The specialist works closely with the Senior Executive Director of Public Affairs, Director of Strategic Communications, Director of Marketing, and Digital Communications Specialist to support media relations, communications, and events.

The Digital Communications Specialist is a relationship builder and versatile communicator who is excellence-driven focused on solutions and is passionate about high-quality outcomes. The Digital Communications Specialist is a seasoned strategist, technologist, creative thinker, and storyteller. He/She also translates complex ideas and topics for internal and external audiences in relatable ways.

  • Maintain and improve upon Durham Public Schools’ presence across social channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram) by developing editorial content and timelines; set performance goals and design metrics to monitor progress.
  • Write compelling and attention-getting copy for social channels, web pages, digital ads, email solicitations.
  • Function as an online community manager by cultivating social interactions across channels and across multiple communities and audiences; design social chats and engage regularly with social audiences.
  • Develop goal-oriented direct response communications to multiple, diverse stakeholders and ensure content and messaging are aligned to program goals and organizational brand.
  • Continually evaluate social media and website engagement using analytic tools; develop tests to continuously improve engagement with audiences.

Communications/Marketing Specialist

Brief Job Description

The Communications/Marketing Specialist manages internal and external communication and collateral that promotes schools and Durham Public Schools as a whole. The specialist works closely with the Chief Communications Officer, Director of Marketing and Community Engagement, and Digital Communications Specialist to support media, communications, and events.

Responsibilities & Duties

  1. Assist in implementing communication strategies that include media outreach and content creation.
  2. Draft press releases, develop content for the DPS website, newsletters and other publications or materials.
  3. Provide messaging for district initiatives, and promotional activities or events for school communities.
  4. Work with internal staff to brainstorm content ideas and other storytelling opportunities.
  5. Provide assistance for special events as needed.
  6. Attend Board of Education meetings and other district-wide events as requested.
  7. Help foster positive relationships with media outlets.
  8. Assist with digital media creation as required.
  9. Support in-person and virtual community engagement events, processes and campaigns.
  10. Track and respond to public records requests.
