Our official post-event press release follows:

RPRS Honors Communications Professionals in the Triangle and Names Lifetime Achievement Recipient

Annual Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communication awards banquet recognizes PR practitioners for successful campaigns and tactics

Raleigh, N.C. – October 25, 2018 –The Raleigh Public Relations Society recognized local public relations and communications professionals during its 2018 Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communicationceremony. The awards banquet, held on October 23 at Jiddi Space & Courtyard at Sitti restaurant in Downtown Raleigh, and the keynote address was provided by Susan Scott, Chief Advancement and Marketing Officer for UNC-TV.

“The Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communication have been an integral component of the Raleigh PR Society since we began as an organization in 1959,” said Lindsay Priester, president of RPRS.  “It’s a huge honor for us to be able to host these awards for such a varied and talented group of professionals. The expertise in communications in the Triangle is vast and truly impressive.”

The Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communication competition is a showcase of exemplary work by PR and communication professionals throughout North Carolina. The competition is held annually and recognizes projects that have achieved excellence in a variety of categories, as judged by an independent panel of judges. This year’s awards were judged by members of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Oregon Chapter.

RPRS also recognized Rick French with the 2018 Watt Huntley Award for Lifetime Achievement. This award is given annually to an individual who has made meaningful contributions to the field of public relations over the course of a career.

Rick is the founder, chairman and CEO of French/West/Vaughan. Under Rick’s leadership, FWV has ranked as one of the nation’s 20 largest independently owned public relations agencies and one of the world’s 75 largest integrated marketing agencies. Rick has been named “Business Leader of the Year” twice by Business North Carolina, “Agency Professional of the Year” by Bulldog Reporter and has been recognized as one of the 300 Most Influential Communicators in the World by PR Week in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

“All of us at French/West/Vaughan would like to congratulate Rick for this remarkable achievement,“ said David Gwyn, FWV president and partner. “From the beginning more than 20 years ago, Rick had the vision and entrepreneurial spirit to be original, creative and bold enough to do things that had never been done in Raleigh, and that vision has benefitted a great many people – for that we owe him a debt of gratitude.”

RPRS Awards Chair David Dean championed the transition from a manual award submission process to an online process for the 2018 Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Excellence in Communication. Dean said, “Thanks to the generous sponsorship of York Properties and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, RPRS was able to integrate an online award submission platform that facilitated a more efficient submission process that generated greater revenue for the organization.”

Special thanks to RPRS Banquet Chair Allison Thiebaud, of AT Marketing and Public Relations, for planning and coordinating this year’s awards banquet. The 2018 award winners are listed below. Visit https://rprs.org/awards/for a full description of each winning submission.

JOB ALERT: Agency PR Executive

JOB ALERT: Agency PR Executive

Position: Agency PR Executive

Hiring: The Republik

Job Type: Full-Time

Location: Raleigh

Job Description:

Do you love making noise? Good!

Does the thought of coming up with the actual idea that generates immense coverage and curiosity thrill you even more? Double-plus good.

If you like sitting around all day, musing over things that others hand to you, this probably isn’t the place for you. However, if you love coming up with high-impact publicity events, timeless social media campaigns and promo notions that no one’s seen before, ones that cause an uproar among consumers, you will thrive here like a stray cat in a bird sanctuary. Ideas, by the way, that shatter expectations, and most of all, look forward in time (not back to desk tchotchkes and other relics).

Our creative marketing communications firm, The Republik (www.therepublik.net) is filled with people who love to think, and make things both beautiful and intense. Not to mention we have a line of clients who crave this kind of work. We’re bound by no media and are quite comfortable working in the digital, social and mobile realms. We need some help around here! We need a Word of Mouth/Buzz Marketing and Social Media maven, one who can jump on board with nary a stumble to manage all aspects of content development and distribution, medial relations, copywriting and developing & executing messaging & social media strategies.

Candidates should be driven to be the best, have 3-5 years of public relations/social media experience and have an appetite to grow within an organization. Critical and strategic thinking is a must. Senior-level talent will be considered (if you’re really, really good, and your ego can fit through the front door without turning sideways.)

WE ARE THE REPUBLIK……

The Networking Dance

Oh, the awkward dance of the networking event. You know what I’m talking about: you walk into a room of people you’ve never met, dressed in a nice outfit; you’ve likely worked a full day, so upon arrival you grab a plate of food and an alcoholic beverage. There are no available tables, so you stand and delicately balance the juggle between your plate of food, glass of wine, and lack of silverware (for “finger food” that requires such). Just as you think you’ve got a rhythm down…someone comes up to you, introduces themselves, and extends their hand. Uh oh.

So why do we risk putting ourselves in an uncomfortable, and dare I say awkward, position for the sake of meeting someone new?

  1. Your time to shine! When someone introduces themselves at a networking event, this is your opportunity to make an impression that will leave them with a desire to continue the conversation. Take advantage of the opportunity to passionately speak  about your business, cause, interest, etc. The individual will more easily draw energy from the excitement behind your mission. These few minutes are a goldmine chance to stake your claim as someone they’d like to continue to get to know, or perhaps even do business with.
  2. Referral building. Once you’ve made your impression on someone, you directly increase the probability of continuing a conversation and establishing a sense of mutual trust. This deepened level of trust could lead to an exchange of referrals…presenting you an individual who is already half sold (or at least highly motivated) on doing business with you. A win win!
  3. Confidence boost. The more times you attend a networking event, and put yourself in the position to meet someone new, you become more comfortable in that type of environment. You’ll learn the tips and tricks of what works for you, how to make a lasting impression, and you’ll walk away with a contact that could potentially help you down the road.
  4. Inspiration. You have the opportunity to learn what strategies are most beneficial for others and could potentially serve you well in your business. There is a wealth of knowledge that can be obtained simply by talking with other professionals in your industry. Glean from their tactics and incorporate a new wave of ideas into your workplace.
  5. Name with a face. People might not always remember your name from networking events, but chances are decent that they will remember what you do and your projected energy behind the  conversation. Being in a face to face conversation with someone raises the likelihood that at some point down the road they might associate your face/conversation with a need for that service.

Embrace the uncomfortable, step into the awkwardness and you might just walk away with a new client!

If you are interested in building your networking skills and conversing with like-minded individuals in the communications industry, join RPRS for one of our many networking events and monthly luncheons. Information can be found here: https://rprs.org/
